Character: Caelina Lorrin
Series: Warhammer 40k (fandom OC)
Age: 35
History:
The year is 41,000. Humans have stumbled out of an age that they call "the dark age of technology" into a new era where only war is known. War against heretics, xenos, and other creatures from the warp. The whole universe is at war with each other constantly. Partly because everyone seems to have different goals but another part of it is the terror that the warp strikes into the heart of the Imperium.
The Warp is almost like a parallel universe where emotions are raw power. In proximity, it's close enough that humans use it for faster than light travel by surrounding their ship with a bubble of reality to travel through it. This makes it sound similar to something out of star trek, but the fact is that it's more comparable to a real life hell. It's occupied with demons and all manner of unspeakable things. The worst part is that everyone has some connection with the warp because the warp is powered by emotions, though limited as to be on the safe side. However, psykers don't have this luxury. If not tied with the emperor, they have a good chance of becoming possessed by a demon from the warp. Even with that tie, it's sometimes still possible for psykers to be driven into chaos. The connection to the warp cannot be turned off, and it can sometimes have negative affects on the person's sanity and how other people react to them on a subconscious level. Particularly strong psykers are usually killed as babies due to paranoia striken into other people just at the sight of them.
Luckily, Lorrin was spared this fate, but she was still abandoned as a baby. She was found by a troop of Imperial Guardsmen and adopted by one of the men. She was named after their female Commissar, along with having her father's last name. While her adopted father cared for her greatly, eventually, she started showing signs of being a psyker. From moving things when she slept to acting strangely aloof. He tried to keep it a secret, but at the age of five, a fellow guardsman caught Lorrin unintentionally using her powers. He took it upon himself to call the Inquisition about the matter. The in command Commissar had no choice but to let her go with them.
All psykers who are deemed a threat to the Imperium are taken to the Adeptus Astra Telepathica for assignment and soul bonding. Either that, or a bullet to the head, but Lorrin was one of the luckier psykers. She was assigned with a Zeta level, making her a true threat to security and making soul bonding to the Emperor a priority. The bond was a success, though she lost her sight in the process. Luckily, psykers can learn to see with their mind, so while her eyes don't work, her mind does. Since she already had plenty of experience with tossing things around, she focused this skill.
At fifteen, she had enough control of her powers to be put into assignment. Her first job was working for an Inquisitor of the Ordo Hereticus, who is known for having small teams of highly specialized people working under them to get the job done. Psykers fall under this, but so do Techpriests and Mercenaries of all different kinds. In particular, Lorrin made friends with a Techpriest named . Though, friends is a very loose term. They understood each other, to some degree, so they formed a bit of a companionship. While they never discussed anything personal Lorrin did learn a bit of respect for Techpriests, as they were shunned similarly to the way Psykers were. The rest of the small group never bothered to talk to Lorrin, and since she was so young, it was easier to bond to someone who had something in common with her, no matter how little it may be.
One day, on a particularly tricky assignment, things went sour quickly. Lorrin watched the only person that she could remember being close to ripped apart in front of her by a psyker who aligned themselves with chaos instead of the imperium. The two fought, but psykers don't fight each other in hand to hand combat. Instead, they use their minds to fight each other. The fight ended with Caelina killing the chaos psyker and getting her first taste of revenge.
After that, her Inquisitor realized that without the techpriest alive, he had no idea how to communicate effectively with Lorrin. He could speak to her, and she would follow orders, but she would always be out of step with the rest of the group. He realized that with the techpriest dead, Lorrin was out of touch with the group so much so that she could no longer be apart of it. So another assignment was made.
After serving with that Inquisitor for seven years, she was assigned to another Inquisitor, but this time he was with Ordo Malleus, and he was a psyker himself. Lorrin served as his right hand, doing what she was told, but the two still never saw eye to eye. He was alright with cutting corners in order to slay daemons. Lorrin, on the other hand, was very strict about her loyalty to the Imperium, and found some of his acts to be skirting very close towards heresy. Still, she respected him, as he was much older and wiser than she was, and they formed something resembling friendship.
During her time with this Inquisitor, she noticed that he became more and more deranged. Psykers aren't exactly known for their sanity, but Lorrin could feel that her superior was slowly slipping away from her. She was stuck with a few options. Her most loyal ones would be to report him to the Imperium or to kill him herself, both which would be completely justified considering the situation. However, before she could make a choice, she was called off to another assignment.
At age 27, she finally found herself back with the Imperial Guard regiment that adopted her in as a child. Since she barely remembered this part of her life, however, it didn't feel like home. A lot of the soldiers that had seen her as a baby had died since. Lorrin found out that her adopted father, the one that gave her a last name and a home for five years, had died in a recent deployment. However, Commissar Caelin was still alive, and after several years she had finally fulfilled her promise to pull some strings and have Lorrin assigned back to their regiment.
While Lorrin tried to adjust to her new life, she still had a nagging feeling of impending doom. After all, she had left an Inquisitor ready to turn to the chaos without telling anyone about it. One night, in secret, Lorrin decided to tell her Commissar about her suspicions and she said that it would be looked into. Next thing she knew, they were off on a mission to slay the very man that had lead her just previously. While this mission wouldn't normally have been assigned to the IG, the Commissar had insisted upon it, assuming that's what Lorrin would have wanted. Really, that was the opposite from the truth, but Lorrin was prepared to put her feelings of camaraderie on the backburner for the job.
Canon Point: After her history.
Personality:
Psykers are known for being a bit off kilter, ranging from insane to simply out of touch with other people. Caelina falls into the latter. She hasn't had a lot of experience talking to other people, she's had very few people in her life that have given her companionship, and she's more used to taking orders than making small talk. Lorrin doesn't particularly understand the point in doing more than saying her two cents, though she can at least try if prompted to. She also, in general, tends to miss obvious social cues and can land herself in awkward social situations very easily. Though, if this bothers her at all is really anyone's guess, since she doesn't particularly act embarrassed by her social misunderstandings.
While Caelina would like to have friends, all of her friendships have been shallow and ended on poor notes. It makes her very hesitant to bond with anyone, psyker or not. While logically she understands that nothing that happened with and was her fault, she still feels like she should avoid getting too close to anyone else. It's mostly for her own sake, she doesn't want to experience extreme emotion and give into the warp that she is so closely tied to by birthright.
Another point of interest is Lorrin's loyalty to the Imperium. Because psykers are connected so strongly to the warp it isn't surprising that many of them either dabble in some heresy or turn to the chaos altogether. However, Caelina is a very by the book psyker. Which is kind of unusual, since psykers don't have many rules. It's everyone around them that has rules about how to treat psykers. Nevertheless, she has a copy of the Imperial Guard Primer and has read it enough that she can quote it if need be.
Also she's really gay but there hasn't been a chance in her history to explore this side of her so I'm hoping to do so in game.
Skills and Abilities: Here's a list of general skills that she would have and what all they can do. They have been taken from here and from the Dark Heresy book which is a part of the published tabletop roleplaying game for Warhammer 40k.
